My Sketches: DODO

This sketch of a Dodo was drawn in the research phase of a W.I.P (work in progress) entitled – The Forbidden Library.

My research for this project drew me into the world of extinction, the fragility of ecosystems, and the sadness and finality of life on earth.

The fascinating history of this flightless bird was just one of many creatures I examined for this project…and in sketching these creatures it always provides a better understanding of them, and hopefully helps you draw out what you see and help describe and translate this to the reader.

Did you know…?

The first sighting of this enigmatic bird was in 1598, when discovered by Dutch sailors, yet the final sighting of the species was in 1662, so a known life span of only 65 years, which is remarkable, considering it’s impact on popular culture.

The Dodo stood around 3 foot tall, and the larger birds could weigh up to 35-39 pounds, about the weight of an office printer or a vacuum cleaner.

The famous phrase ‘As Dead as a Dodo,’ still serves as a reminder of human-induced extinction.
