My Sketches: Peacock Butterfly

The Peacock has to be one of the UK’s most charismatic butterflies. With striking wing markings that hark back to the days of the Spitfire, and that flash of colour reminiscent of the feathers of the peacock, it is of course named after.

Did you know…?

The Peacock has one of the longer lifespans of the UK butterfly population, and lives for about 11 months in its adult form, and although a good number of these are spent in hibernation, most adult butterflies only live for 2 to 3 weeks.

There is also no critical evidence that the etymology is linked to the phrase ‘flutter by’ and the long-standing rumour of mispronunciations amongst the English gentry giving it it’s name.

The fact that all butterflies, flutter by is just a curious coincidence.
